Jasmine, a popular flower name that can also double as a Disney princess name, is derived from the Arabic and Persian word yāsamīn, referring to the flower. Jasmine is a genus of about 200 species of fragrant-flowered shrubs and vines of the olive family. It's also a popular fragrance in aromatherapy and the name given to the princess in "Aladdin." Jasmine first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for girl names in 1973 before skyrocketing in popularity in the 1980s. It debuted in the top-100 in 1986 and was a top-50 girl's name every year between 1989 and 2008. Though not as popular today, it's still in the top-200 and was given to more than 1,500 baby girls in 2023. It's also the name Dwayne Johnson gave his daughter Jasmine Lia, born in 2015.
