The name Marcus is believed to be derived from the Roman name Mars, referring to the god of war in Roman mythology. It has appeared inside the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names every year since 1900 and cracked the top-100 for the first time in 1970. Marcus remained in the top-100 for the next three decades, but is now on the brink of falling out of the top-250 like its close relative Mark did in 2021 and 2023. Despite the strength behind the name, many parents today don't appear to be interested in naming their child Marcus.
