The name Silas is believed to be a short form of Silvanus, meaning "of the woods" or "of the forest" in Latin, or a variant of the name Saul, meanng "asked for" or "prayed for" in Hebrew. In the Bible, Silas was an early Christian prophet, missionary and companion of St. Paul the Apostle. The name was popular in the early 1900s, but didn't crack the Social Security Administration's top-200 for boy names until 2011. Silas has now been a top-100 boy's name every year since 2020 and is the name actress Jessica Biel and singer Justin Timberlake gave their daughter Silas Randall, born in 2015.
