Ina Garten shares foolproof way to grill a steak just in time for Memorial Day

Sara Vallone05/21/25

On Wednesday, May 21, beloved chef Ina Garten took to Instagram to share her foolproof way of grilling the perfect steak “every time.”

“I used to be terrified to grill,” Garten said in the video. “I’d buy these gorgeous steaks, and then I was sure I was going to overcook them.”

That was “until one day,” Garten “met one of the owners of Lobel’s meat market,” a butcher shop in New York City. “He told me how to grill a perfect steak every time. I'm going to show you how to do it.”

Calling the trick “so cool,” Garten explained that the first step is to grab one and a half inch thick New York Strip steaks.

The second trick “is that I've got a grill that's got half of the coals just on one side and no coals on the other side.”

“So put the steaks on the hot side to sear them for two minutes, exactly,” Garten continued, then “we’re going to turn them over and sear them for two minutes on the other side. So now I'm going to take the steak and put them on the cool side of the grill, away from the flame, and it's going to cook for exactly eight minutes if you want it rare, and 10 minutes if you want it medium.”

According to Garten, if you follow those steps exactly, the steaks “come out perfectly every time.”

In addition to cooking the perfect steak on Memorial Day, if you are planning on attending a get together, in an upcoming interview with Today Show’s Willie Geist, Garten shared the two things she would never bring to a party.

“There are two things I don't think you should ever bring to a dinner party, and they're so common, is something that the host feels like they should serve. I mean, starting with like Jell-o salad, what are you going to do with that?” Garten asked.

“And don't ever bring flowers that aren't in a vase. Like, everybody's arriving. Got these flowers,” the last thing you want to do is force your host to search for a vase during a busy time.
