“Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God.”
Not all breakups come with a negative twist — especially when you gain a best friend out of it.
During an Aug. 7 appearance on the “Therapuss with Jake Shane” podcast, Selena Gomez opened up about her 2010 breakup with Nick Jonas and how it led to a cherished friendship with Taylor Swift.
At the start of their two-year romance, Swift was dating Nick Jonas’ brother and bandmate Joe Jonas.

“We were young. We all know and love each other now and it’s so cute. We didn’t know what we were doing,” Gomez told Shane on the podcast.
“She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other,” Gomez added.
Gomez went on to explain that she was “about 15” when she started dating Nick Jonas, while Swift — who she described as “the crazy curly Taylor” with a lot of bracelets — was a few years older.
“So, at that age, we became best friends, bonded over the breakup as girls do,” Gomez continued on the podcast. “Then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after.”
“And here we are now 16 years later,” she added.
According to People, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas were first linked in 2008 before briefly splitting up the following year and rekindling their romance in 2010. They broke up for good several months later.
"We were babies!” Gomez said at the time, per People. “We actually caught up the other day, and it's really fun to be able to do that. That, to me, was like puppy love. It was very sweet. He's lovely."
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas only dated for a few months after sparking a relationship in July 2008, according to Cosmopolitan.
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift also bonded over an unreleased song in 2008
Elsewhere in the podcast, it was revealed that Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift became good friends after the singer played her an unreleased version of “Love Story.”
“I was in a hotel room and I remember it vividly,” Gomez said on the podcast. “It was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.”
At the time, Gomez said Swift was unsure if it would be the first single off her second studio album “Fearless.”
“Just hearing her say those little thoughts and just listening to it. Yeah, she is a chameleon, she’s incredible,” Gomez said of Swift.
“Love Story” was released on Sept. 12, 2008, according to Genius. It was the first single off her album “Fearless,” which was released two months later.
More recently, on July 20, Gomez took to Instagram in preparation of her 33rd birthday, which she celebrated on July 22.
“I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey that has brought me here. This past year has truly been the most beautiful year of my life, and I owe so much of that to all of you,” she wrote in the caption.
The post included a series of snaps with her fiancé Benny Blanco and several of her close friends — including one with Swift.
The photo shows the two surrounded by metallic-colored balloons while staring up at the camera.
“Thank you for your unwavering love and kindness,” Gomez added in the caption.
