“A lot of times, there hasn’t been enough structure at home, and no consequences.”
Meghan Trainor’s son is no stranger to seeing his dad on the big screen.
The 31-year-old “All About That Bass” singer opened up about her life as a mother to her two sons, whom she shares with actor Daryl Sabara, in an interview with Bustle, published Aug. 21.
And she finally answered the question that’s been on everyone’s minds since she became a mom.
“Have your kids watched Spy Kids yet?” Bustle’s Gabrielle Bondi asked Trainor.
“Riley has seen it a couple of times,” she says of her older son, “but I don't know if he registers what's happening, because he calls it ‘Baby Dada.’”
Sabara starred in each of the first four installments of the “Spy Kids” franchise, starting with 2001’s “Spy Kids” and ending with 2011’s “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World,” according to IMDB.
To bring it full-circle, Meghan Trainor’s kids are now the proud owners of toys that look like a younger version of their dad.
“I bought all the toys that I could find on eBay, so they could have little figurines of [their dad],” she said in her interview with Bustle.
Daryl Sabara and Meghan Trainor first met in 2014, but didn’t start dating until two years later and went Instagram official in October 2016, according to People.
The couple got engaged in 2017 and tied the knot in December 2018, per the outlet.
Their first pregnancy announcement came in an October 2020 Instagram post, followed by the birth of their first son Riley on Feb. 8, 2021 — six days before his original due date.
Their second baby announcement came in January 2023 during an appearance on the “Today” show. Their second son, Barry, was born on July 1, 2023 — on the seventh anniversary of their first date.
Meghan Trainor says Riley is about to start school for the first time
When asked how motherhood has changed her look on life, Trainor said “it’s the best but it is weird.”
“I don't know a lot of people who do what I do and have babies,” she said of her double-life as a pop star and mom of two in her interview with Bustle.
“I would like to get more mom friends who do what I do, because it's weird doing a 12-hour day like this, and then wiping boogers,” she joked.
With Meghan Trainor’s son Riley turning five in less than six months, she reveals that the family is about to start a new phase of parenting soon.
“We're talking about putting [Riley] in school. He's 4 now and gonna be in preschool,” she told Bustle.
According to licensed psychologist Carolyn Rubenstein, Ph.D., most kids start preschool between ages 3 and 4, per Parents.com — though the CDC says some kids start as late five years old.
Trainor expressed her fear that she won’t get to see her kids much while she’s traveling for work, especially with one of her kids starting school.
“And they're like, ‘Well, this will make him normal,’” she said. “But I'm not normal. So I'm figuring it out as I go, and I have a lot of questions.”
As for her presence on social media, Trainor says she leans on her husband to help her determine what to post — and what to caption her posts.
“My husband and I communicate about every single post, especially if it's with the kids,” she told Bustle.
She also opened up about a time when a fan recognized her family in Target — but it wasn’t her that gave it away, and it rubbed her the wrong way.

“I don't feel famous, and I don't think my kids or husband are famous, but then we go to Target, and fans say, ‘I saw [your son] Riley, and then I knew it was you,’” she said. “I don't like that.”
