WATCH: South Fulton police officers rescue mother and two babies from overturned vehicle

Ryan Brennan | August 24, 2025

Two officers from the City of South Fulton Police Department are being praised for their heroic actions.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, Sgt. Myesha Cooper and Cpl. Robert Johnson responded to a call of an overturned vehicle following a car crash on State Route 92 and Hall Road, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

Within minutes, the near-tragedy turned into a full-blown police rescue.

According to WSBTV, “police say one car ran a red light, hit another car and ended up upside down at the bottom of a slope.”

When the two officers arrived on the scene, they were met by witnesses who were trying to free a man who was pinned underneath the vehicle, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

Once the man told Cooper and Johnson that there were still three people trapped in the vehicle, the two officers knew they had to act fast.

That’s when Johnson busted out a window and cut through the airbag to see a mom and two babies stuck inside the wreckage.

“A citizen helped me get into the woodline. They advised there’s a baby in the car. There’s a baby in the car,” Cooper said of the moment, according to WSBTV.

“Then come to find out it was two babies in the car. It was a toddler and an infant,” she added.

It wasn’t long before a mother, toddler and newborn were taken out of the wreckage and pulled to safety.

The police rescue was captured in a tense bodycam footage released by the South Fulton Police Department and shared by Fox 5 Atlanta.

Cooper and Johnson hailed as heroes following police rescue

According to WSBTV, five people were taken to the hospital and one was checked at the scene — and everyone is expected to recover.

Despite their heroic acts, both police officers remained coy when praised for their efforts.

"I do this every day.  We don't look for validation or recognition. When we put on this uniform, we got a job to do," Cooper said, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

"If there is recognition that's fine, but end of the day we are here for the community,” she added.

She later praised the witnesses for their help and described it as a “beautiful thing to see that everyone’s coming together,” per WSBTV.

According to the City of South Fulton’s website, Cooper was recently promoted to Sergeant in Aug. 2024.

As for Johnson, he described it as “the best feeling in the world” to see the two babies pulled to safety.

“When you see that type of policing, selflessness...bravery, teamwork from the community...it’s just a proud day for this department,” Dep. Chief Eddie Smith added, per WSBTV.
