During the first week of class, students and staff at a Minneapolis Catholic school have endured devastation and heartache after a shooter opened fire at the institution.
In a statement shared with the Associated Press, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the unnamed shooter walked up to the side of the church associated with the Annunciation Catholic School before shooting through the windows.
Sitting in the pews of the church were children attending mass.
“The sheer cruelty and cowardice, firing into a church full of children, is absolutely incomprehensible,” O’Hara said during the briefing.
In a separate statement, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, said, "These were Minneapolis families. These were American families, and the amount of pain that they are suffering right now is extraordinary."
"Don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying. It was the first week of school. They were in a church," Frey continued. "These are kids that should be learning with their friends. They should be playing on the playground. They should be able to go to school or church in peace without the fear or risk of violence, and their parents should have the same kind of assurance. These are the sort of basic assurances every family should have every step of the day, regardless of where they are in our country."
As of 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, two children have died and 17 others are reportedly injured.
The AP reports that the shooter, who was armed with multiple types of firearms, is also dead.
Aubrey Pannhoff, a 16-year-old student at a nearby Catholic school, told the Associated Press that she’s “just asking him (God) why right now. It’s little kids.”
