Serena Williams Shares Why Stepping Away From Her Daughters Isn’t Easy — Even for One Night

Lauren Jarvis-Gibson | November 13, 2025

Serena Williams took a rare night out on November 8 to the Baby2Baby Gala but admitted it wasn’t easy to leave her two daughters behind.

In a new interview with People, the tennis legend opened up about the challenges of balancing motherhood and me-time. “Well, tonight was definitely a little more difficult. I don’t like to leave my kids,” Williams admitted. “I have a nighttime routine with them every day.”

Williams shares daughters Olympia, 8, and Adira, 2, with her husband, entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian.

Despite the tug at her heartstrings, the mom of two said she was grateful to support a cause close to her heart.

“I love Baby2Baby because they’re really just about kids and helping so many babies and so many mothers as well,” Williams said.

“They’re so supportive, so I just feel like it wasn’t easy, but it’s also nice. I get to come out, get dressed up, put on a little lip, and have some fun with some amazing people.”

Williams has long been open about embracing motherhood and giving herself grace. “I’m a wonderful mom,” she said in an April interview after being named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People. “I think we, as women, don’t give ourselves credit, but I’m a great mom. I really am. I do everything. I’m freaking the room mom at Olympia’s school this year.”

In the same Time interview, the 46-year-old also opened up about setting boundaries with her children — especially when it comes to sharing. “When Olympia tells Adira no, I’m just like, ‘Excuse me, you have to share,’ because it’s triggering,” she said.

Williams also spoke about balancing attention between her two daughters. “I try to be less on baby, but she’s [Adira] just so cute,” she said. “How do you not give her all the attention in the world? Oh my God. It’s so hard.”

When asked if the athlete would ever go back to playing professional tennis, she replied, “I just can’t peel myself away from these children. Another reason I had to transition was because I wanted to have more kids. And I look at Adira and I’m like, ‘Was it worth it?’ I literally thought about it the other day. I was like, ‘Yeah, it was definitely worth it.”
