Cat Gives Birth in a Chicken Coop, and the Hens’ Response Has 27 Million People Smiling

Hanna Wickes | April 27, 2026

Sometimes the internet delivers exactly the story you needed. A video from a homestead Instagram account has captured one of the most unexpectedly tender scenes between animals you’ll see this year — and the 27 million people who have watched it clearly agree.

The post, shared on April 9 by @farmer.jo.homesteading on Instagram, shows a black cat who gave birth to her kittens in a nesting box inside a chicken coop — right next to the hens. The video features a cat, some chickens, a nesting box and one of the purest displays of cross-species caregiving you’ll find anywhere.

That alone would make for a charming little moment. But the video takes a turn that somehow makes the whole thing even sweeter.

The Hens Stepped Right In

When the mother cat gets up and steps away from the kittens for a moment, the chickens don’t scatter or look the other way. They gather close and seem to take over warming duty, sitting on the kittens like they’re their own eggs.

The hens saw a litter of newborn kittens, and they sat right down on them. Like eggs. No hesitation.

The video has racked up over 27 million views and over 1 million likes — numbers that confirm this has become a genuine shared cultural moment. This is the kind of clip people forward to family group chats, post on Facebook and bring up at work as “the best thing I’ve seen all week.”

The Comments Section Is Pure Gold

With that scale of viral engagement, the comments section became its own source of delight. People underneath the post brought warmth and humor in equal measure, and the best ones managed to be funny, tender and perfectly observed all at once.

“The hen was her birth doula,” one commenter wrote.

“To be an interspecies aunt must be an honor,” another added.

One person imagined the chicken’s inner monologue: “The chicken is thinking ‘that cat just laid the world’s weirdest egg…’”

And then there was the comment that captured the whole moment in three words: “Mammas help mammas.”

Meet Bitsy, the Most Devoted Babysitter on the Farm

The story didn’t end with one viral post. The farmer behind the account has kept viewers updated with the cat and chicken arrangements, and the follow-up content is every bit as heartwarming as the original.

In another video from April 11, a hen named Bitsy sits on all the baby kittens while the mama cat left for some refreshments. The original post had already gone massively viral by then, but Bitsy’s dedication added a new chapter that viewers couldn’t get enough of.

The caption read, “Oh Bitsy 🩷 such a special girl taking great care of these babies while mama cat is out getting some food and water. These babies are well loved and very well taken care of!”

Two days after the original post, Bitsy was still faithfully on duty. The mama cat needed to step away for food and water, and Bitsy was right there on the kittens — no one asked her, no one assigned the role. She simply showed up, settled in and kept those babies warm.

The Kittens Actually Need the Help

The scene is undeniably adorable, but the hens are also providing something the kittens genuinely require in their earliest days of life.

According to VCA Hospitals, “Warmth is essential for the newborn. Kittens cannot control their own body temperature for the first couple of weeks of life. In nature, kittens stay warm by direct body contact with their mother and littermates in the enclosed nest bed.”

When the mama cat steps away, those kittens lose their primary source of heat. The hens — by sitting on them the same way they would sit on their own eggs — are keeping the newborns at a safe temperature. What looks like an impossibly sweet cross-species friendship is also a genuinely important act of care for tiny, vulnerable kittens who can’t yet regulate their own warmth.
