Dallas, the third-most populous city in Texas, was originally a surname that meant "valley house" in Old English or "meadow dwelling" in Scottish Gaelic. The city is believed to be named after former Vice President George M. Dallas, who served alongside then-President James K. Polk between 1845 and 1849. Though used for baby girls, Dallas is predominantly masculine today and has appeared inside the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names every year since 1900. It's the name singer Fantasia Barrino chose for her son, born in 2011.
