Emily, the English feminine form of the Roman name Aemilius, is derived from the Latin word aemulus, meaning "rival." It was a top-300 girl's name in the United States every year between 1900 and 1972, and has now been a top-100 girl's name every year since 1973. Emily even spent more than a decade as the most popular girl's name in the U.S. from 1996 through 2007. It's the name comedian-actor Chevy Chase gave his daughter, born in 1988, but some parents today might think of the main character in the Netflix series "Emily in Paris," played by actress Lily Collins.
