The name Ethan comes from the Hebrew name Etan, meaning "solid," "firm" and "enduring." In the Hebrew Bible, Ethan the Ezrahite was known for his wisdom, knowledge of the Law and authoring Psalm 89. It started gaining popularity in the 1950s and cracked the top-100 for boy names in 1989 before settling as a top-10 boy's name every year between 2002 and 2016. It has fallen back in recent years, but remains in the top-25, as of 2023. Comedian Iliza Shlesinger welcomed a baby boy named Ethan Lyons with her husband, Noah Galuten, in 2024.
