Gemma, one of the trendiest gemstone names in the United States today, is derived from the Italian word gemma, meaning "gem," "precious stone" or "jewel." It only recently joined the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for girl names, debuting in 2008 and cracking the top-200 for the first time in 2019. Gemma's the name "Summer House" cast member Lindsay Hubbard gave her daughter Gemma Britt, born in 2024. It was also popularized by actress Katey Sagal, who played Gemma Teller in the hit biker series "Sons of Anarchy."
