Isabelle, the French form of Isabel, is derived from the Hebrew name Elisheva and composed of the Hebrew elements el, meaning "God," and shava, meaning "oath." Together, it translates to "oath to God" or "my God is an oath." It was a popular name in the early-1900s, but lost its grip and fell off the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for girl names by the 1950s. Isabelle returned to the list in 1991 and was a top-150 girl's name in the U.S. every year between 2000 and 2022. "Scandal" actress Kerry Washington welcomed a daughter named Isabelle Amarachi in 2014 with her husband, former NFL cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
