Jade, one of the more popular gemstone names for girls, is derived from the Spanish phrase piedra de la ijada, meaning "stone of the flank." The gemstone, known for its green color, was once believed to cure renal colic, hence the "stone of the flank" derivation. Jade first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for girl names in 1975 before debuting in the top-100 in 2001. It stayed in the top-150 until re-entering the top-100 in 2020, where it remains today. Other popular gemstone names include Amethyst, Opal, Ruby, Emerald and Esmerelda.
