Jeremy, the English form of Jeremiah, comes from the Hebrew name Yirmeyahu, which is composed of the Hebrew elements rum, meaning "to exalt," and yah, referring to the Hebrew God. Therefore, it translates to "God will exalt." Jeremy first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names in 1942 and was a top-100 boy's name every year between 1970 and 2002. It has fallen back in the two decades since, but was still a top-250 boy's name, as of 2023. Nonetheless, most parents seem to prefer Jeremiah over Jeremy.
