Jose, the Spanish and Portuguese form of Joseph, comes from the Greek name Ioseph and Hebrew name Yosef, which is derived from the Hebrew word yasaf, meaning "to add" or "to increase." Jose was a top-200 boy's name throughout the first half of the 20th century before settling in the top-100 every year since 1963. It's more common than Yosef and Josue, but nowhere near as common as Joseph (in the United States, at least).
