Joseph, the English form of the Greek name Ioseph, comes from the Hebrew name Yosef and is derived from the Hebrew word yasaf, meaning "to add" or "to increase." In the Bible, Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob and Rachel who was sold into slavery by his brothers before becoming a ruler of Egypt, second only to the Pharoah. Joseph has been a top-30 boy's name every year since 1900 and has spent much of that time inside the top-10, according to the Social Security Administration. It was given to more than 7,200 baby boys in 2023, alone.
