The name Joshua comes from the Hebrew name Yehoshua, which is composed of the Hebrew elements yeho, meaning "God," and yasha, meaning "to save." Therefore, the name translates to "God will save" or "God is salvation." In the Bible, Joshua was Moses' right-hand man who takes over and leads the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses' death. The name spent much of the first half of the 20th century outside of the Social Security Administration's top-500, but started gaining popularity in the 1960s. Joshua has now been a top-100 boy's name every year since 1971 and was a top-five name every year between 1983 and 2008. It's also the name "Grey's Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl chose for her son Joshua Bishop, born in 2016.
