Josie, a diminutive of Josephine, comes from the Hebrew name Yosef and is derived from the Hebrew word yasaf, meaning "to add" or "to increase." It was popular in the early 1900s but spent much of the rest of the 20th century outside the Social Security Administration's top-500 for girl names. Josie started making a comeback in the late-1990s and has now been a top-200 girl's name every year since 2018 as it approaches the top-100. It's also the name "Counting On" stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar chose for their youngest child Josie, the 19th child in their larger-than-life family.
