Lucas, the Latin form of Loukas, is believed to be a shortened form of the Greek name Loukanos, meaning "from Lucania." Lucania was an ancient region of Southern Italy, corresponding to the modern-day region of Basilicata. It wasn't popular in the United States until the 1970s and cracked the Social Security Administration's top-100 for the first time in 1980. It has now been a top-100 boy's name every year since 1993 and a top-10 boy's name since 2018. Lucas was the name "Grey's Anatomy" star Camilla Luddington gave her son, born in 2020, and the name British royals Mike and Zara Tindall gave their son, born in 2021.
