Lucia, the feminine form of Lucius, is derived from the Latin word lux, meaning "light." It was popularized by the 4th-century martyr Saint Lucia (Saint Lucy), the patron saint of the blind and the inspiration behind the name of the country Saint Lucia. Lucia has appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for girl names every year since 1900, but didn't become commonplace until the 2000s. It went from ranking 523rd in 2002 to cracking the top-200 for the first time ever in 2017. In 2023, it came nine spots away from debuting in the top-100. Several celebrities have given their daughter this name, including "Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera (Lucia Marisol), "Mighty Aphrodite" actress Mira Sorvino and singer Ricky Martin.
