Luis, the Spanish form of Louis, comes from the Germanic name Ludwig and is composed of the Germanic elements hlut, meaning "famous" or "loud," and wig, meaning "war" or "battle." Therefore, it translates to "famous warrior" or "famous battle." It slowly grew in popularity in the United States throughout much of the first half of the 20th century before cracking the top-200 for the first time in 1964. Luis was a top-100 boy's name every year from 1980 until 2015 and has remained in the top-150 ever since as the preferred spelling over Louis. In fact, Luis was used 1,200 times more than Louis in 2023, per the Social Security Administration.
