Mariana, the feminine form of Marianus, comes from the Roman name Marius and Mars, referring to the Roman god of war. Other theories suggest that it's a combination of the names Mary, meaning "sea of bitterness," and Anna, meaning "favor" or "grace." Mariana first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 in 1980 and cracked the top-200 for the first time in 2004 before falling out of the top-300 in 2012. It has now been a top-150 girl's name every year since 2021 and many parents are using it as a water-inspired name via the Mariana Trench, an oceanic trench located in the western Pacific Ocean.
