Matias, the Portuguese and Finnish form of Matthias, comes from the Greek name Matthaios and Hebrew name Mattithiah, which is derived from the Hebrew roots mattat, meaning "gift," and yah, referring to the Hebrew God. Therefore, it translates to "gift of God." Matias first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names in 2004 before cracking the top-200 for the first time in 2022. It's more common than Mathias, but not as common as Mateo or Matthew. Filipino author and stylist Liz Uy has a son named Matias, born in 2021.
