The name Peter comes from the Greek name Petros and Greek word petra, meaning "stone." In the Bible, Peter was one of Jesus's Twelve Apostles and a leader of the early Christian church. He was originally named Simon, but Jesus gave him the nickname Peter (Cephas in Aramaic). Peter was a top-100 boy's name in the United States every year between 1900 and 1996, but has grown less popular in the 2000s. It remained in the top-200 unitl 2011 and has fallen as far back as 215th in 2020 and 2021.
