Sawyer, an English surname-turned-given-name, was originally an occupational name given to someone who cuts wood or works at a saw mill. It was popularized by the main character in Mark Twain's 1876 novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." It first appeared as a given name in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names in 1991 and has been a top-150 boy's name every year since 2012 (including four years in the top-100 from 2015 to 2018). CNN correspondent Erica Hill named her son Sawyer Steven, born in 2010, and iconic filmmaker Steven Spielberg also has a son named Sawyer, born in 1992.
