Steven, a variant of Stephen and masculine form of Stephanie, comes from the Greek name Stephanos, meaning "crown," "wreath" or "that which surrounds." It has appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 for boy names every year since 1900 and was a top-50 boy's name every year between 1945 to 1999. Steven isn't as popular as it once was, but still ranked inside the top-250 and was given to nearly 1,400 baby boys in 2023. It's the most common form of this name in the United States, even more so than Stephen, Stefan and Stevie.
