Waylon, a variant of Wayland, comes from the Old English name Weland and Germanic root wīlą, meaning "craft" or "cunning." In Germanic and Old Norse legend, Weland is a master smith and craftsman. Waylon first appeared in the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 in 1968, but fell off the list by 1998. It quickly returned in 2002 and has now been a top-100 boy's name every year since 2021. "Sopranos" star Drea de Matteo named her son Waylon "Blackjack" Albert, born in 2011.
