BabyCenter Warns That These Once-Beloved Baby Names Are On the Verge of Extinction

Ryan Brennan | January 16, 2026

Some baby names aren’t designed to last forever.

Baby name trends tend to change, preferences and tastes are known to shift, and names that once felt fresh can quietly fade into the background — making way for new names to steal the spotlight.

And that’s exactly what parents can expect to see with some baby names in 2026 and beyond.

According to a new BabyCenter report, published Jan. 13, some baby name trends — such as place names, unique spellings and names that start with D or K — are starting to lose popularity (and fast).

For example, the names Charleigh (for girls) and Kylian (for boys) were among the names to see the biggest drop from 2024 to 2025.

Charleigh dropped 421 spots, while Kylian dropped 512 spots, according to BabyCenter.

Name variants like Alivia (instead of Olivia), place names like Malaysia and London, D names like Dylan and Danielle, K names like Kenna and Kinley, and boy names ending in Y (Corey, Harry) also dipped.

Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the other baby names losing popularity, per BabyCenter:

Other surprising baby boy names to crack the list include Reign, Quinn, Gage, Anderson, Gunner, Bryce, Chandler, Frank, Bruce, Langston and Dev.

Meanwhile, baby girl names like Goldie, Everlee, Regina, Brinley, Payton and Abby saw declines.

The report comes just two weeks after baby name expert Colleen Slagen revealed what she believed to be the biggest baby name trends to keep an eye out for in 2026 in an interview with People.

Sagan shined the spotlight on four-letter names, boy names for baby girls, French names with a vintage vibe, word names you can find in the dictionary and nature names with a classic feel.
