Bella Thorne’s fans are divided over her surprise proposal — and she can’t help but laugh it off.
The 27-year-old “Shake It Up” actress went viral on Aug. 16 when she posted an Instagram carousel of her getting down on one knee to propose to her fiancé Mark Emms.
For context, Emms had already proposed to Thorne in May 2023 — which she detailed in the caption.

“3 years ago we met,” Thorne wrote in her post. “1 year later he proposed, Now 1 year later so did I.”
In the video, Thorne is seen getting down on one knee (followed by Emms doing the same) in the couple’s home, which was decked out in flowers, candles and heart-shaped balloons.
Some fans were quick to point out how sweet the gesture was in the comment section.
“She believes in equality for their relationship, that she’s committed to him as much as he is & that it doesn’t have to be a one-sided cute proposal,” one fan wrote of the surprise proposal.
“This is so romantic what is wrong with yall,” another fan commented.
“I think this is so wonderful honestly. It shows that both parties want the same thing and men deserve beautiful proposals too. Congratulations to you both!!” a third follower wrote.
Unfortunately, most of the comments found a woman proposing to a man confusing and unbearable.
“Ok ladies let’s not normalise this, okay?” one user argued.
“If he already proposed why did you do it lol I’m confused,” another wrote.
Others were telling Thorne she should’ve kept the video in her galleries and some were even calling for her to delete the post.

Thorne later took to her Instagram Stories to laugh off the criticism and division among her fans.
"The comments on my post are hilarious!!" she wrote on Aug. 17, according to E! News.
"Totally split down the middle. Half of u are like let's not normalize proposing to your partner -- other half is like yeah girl power this is the sweetest!!" she joked.
Bella Thorne and Mark Emms first met in August 2022 at a party celebrating Cara Delevingne’s birthday, according to People.
The couple announced their engagement nine months later and have been in the wedding planning stage ever since.
While talking to People in December 2023, Thorne admitted that they’re still “learning each other’s traits” and aren’t shy about talking to a therapist over any disagreements they have.
“I think me and Mark are really in our language of now, talking it out now, so we can just do it or get through it or decide how we want to feel about it,” she told People at the time.
Nonetheless, she told the outlet that their relationship has only grown since Emms’ proposal.
“Every day we kind of draw closer,” she said.
