Ashley Judd hosted an ‘Inner Teen Dance Party’ to heal from her troubled childhood

Ryan Brennan | June 22, 2025

Ashley Judd is giving her “inner teenager” the dance party she always wanted — but never got.

The 57-year-old actress took to Instagram on Monday, June 9 to share a collection of wholesome photos and videos from an “Inner Teen Dance Party” she hosted with friends and family.

In the caption, Ashley Judd opened up about her troubled childhood, which she said robbed her of moments like those pictured.

“As a teen (& even 9 year old) I was left alone for months (& lived alone in 10th and 11th grades) with no adults or caregiver in my homes,” she wrote. “My teen endured so many grave boundary violations.”

Ashley Judd is, of course, the daughter of country music singer Naomi Judd and half-sister of country music artist Wynonna Judd.

While she never followed in her family’s footsteps, Ashley Judd forged her own career as an actress and has appeared in several big-time projects, including “Heat” (1995) and “Kiss the Girls” (1997).

But she has been open in the past about the neglect she experienced throughout her childhood.

“Today, it is an honor, right, & holy daily practice to guide, support, listen to, & be here for my Inner Teen as she heals,” Judd added in her June 9 caption.

“I 'de-parentify' her & relieve her of all those responsibilities that never should have been hers as an adolescent,” she continued.

In the videos, Judd can be seen dancing freely with friends and family, playing a tambourine, singing into a balloon-turned-microphone and enjoying the beautiful day outside.

“My Inner Teen is a source of fire, energy, backbone, a volcanic sense of justice/outrage, integrity, unselfconscious self-expression, freedom, physical movement, & powerful curiosity,” she explained.

“I love creating spaces & moments to re-stage a particular age — to let out that tremendous physical, emotional energy that was so neglected back then,” she added.

Ashley Judd previously detailed her troubled childhood in a 2011 memoir

Fans who have followed Ashley Judd’s journey from a lost child to a fiercely dedicated advocate were happy to see the “High Crimes” actress living her best life.

“Watching you heal is so amazing. So incredibly happy for you,” one fan wrote in the comment section of her video, while another added, “I want to be you when I grow up. You are pure joy to watch.”

“I love witnessing your free spirit. Such a beautiful and healing day for you,” a third fan commented.

The post comes more than 14 years after Ashley Judd detailed her experience with abandonment and abuse as a child in her 2011 memoir, “All That is Bitter & Sweet.”

In the book, she explores the impact of living in a “dysfunctional,” Hollywood-driven family.

"I was taught to believe that our lifestyle was normal and never to question it or complain, even when I was left alone for hours, sometimes days at a time,” she wrote in the book, per CBS News

“(My Mom) and my sister have been quoted as saying that our family put the 'fun' in dysfunction,” Ashley Judd wrote. “I wondered: 'Who, exactly, was having all the fun? What was I missing?'"

In a 2011 interview on the “Today” show, Judd said she can’t change what happened — but she’s in the process of changing what happens.

"You know, it's too late to go back and have a happy childhood, but by the grace of God and you know, a pretty simple program of recovery and fellowship, life is good today," she said, per CBS News.

In her recent post, Ashley Judd clarified that she was loved as a child — but the dysfunction was real.

“My family loved me very much — it was just a system that didn’t work very well, & that is another conversation,” she wrote.

Her idea to throw a “dance party for your Inner Child,” was her way of taking back what she missed as a teenager.

“As you know, I’ve been going inside myself to become my own Inner Loving Parent to supply myself with the nurturing, gentleness, guidance, support, love, & respect I very much needed growing up,” she wrote.

“When I was jumping around to the Clash, my Loved Ones — some past 80 years old — were playing air guitar with wands for blowing bubbles,” she added. “That, my friends, is truly satisfying party.”

She even sent Bono, the lead singer of U2, a video of her singing his song, “One,” into a balloon.
