Billy Joel cancels the remainder of his tour after receiving brain disorder diagnosis

Sara Vallone05/23/25

Billy Joel is canceling the remainder of his upcoming shows.

On Friday, May 23, Joel shared that he was recent diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, normal pressure hydrocephalus “is a brain disorder in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain's ventricles, which are fluid-filled chambers.”

“The three main symptoms of NPH are known as Hakim’s triad. Between 50% and 75% of people with NPH show all three symptoms at the same time,” Cleveland Clinic reports.

Hakim’s triad includes gait issues, urinary incontinence, and cognitive difficulties.

The decision to cancel his shows comes after Joel fell onstage in February.

The singer shared a statement on Instagram.

“Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH),” the statement reads. “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.”

“Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” the statement continues. “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.”

“He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage,” the statement shared before sharing a quote from Joel himself.

“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”

Fans and friends shared their well wishes in the comment section of Joel’s post.

“I really understand,” fellow singer Kristin Chenoweth wrote. “I have menieres. Very similar!! Sending love.”

“I have hydrocephalus too!! Wishing you a speedy recovery,” another fan wrote.
