Billy Joel’s first wife shares first comments since his brain disorder diagnosis

Ryan Brennan | June 8, 2025

Elizabeth Weber is opening up about her nine-year union to Billy Joel for the first time.

The 76-year-old, who married the “Piano Man” artist, also 76, in 1973 before going their separate ways in 1982, had plenty of good things to say about their marriage at the premiere of Joel’s new documentary.

The film, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” debuted at the Tribeca Festival on June 4 — and Weber was there to take it all in.

"It was great then, it's great whenever I think about it, and it's great now,” Weber, who was also Joel’s former business manager, said of their marriage in an interview with People at the premiere.

According to the outlet, it’s Weber’s first public comments about the pair’s former union.

The couple met in the 1970s when Weber was dating one of Joel’s bandmates. The two eventually had an affair before breaking up shortly after due to guilt, as Joel explained in the documentary, per People.

They later rekindled their relationship and wed in 1973 before divorcing nine years later.

At the premiere, Weber described her decision to take part in the documentary as an easy one.

"Susan (one of the directors) approached me in a very personal way, and it resonated with me, and Billy licensed the music, so I knew that there would be good music," Weber said of her decision.

"So it felt right — and it still does,” she added.

People also talked to Steve Cohen, the executive producer of the two-part doc, who said that the project wouldn’t be complete without Weber — adding that her involvement was “crucial.”

“There was reluctance in the beginning because she's been out of the public eye and she's been maligned incredibly in the blogosphere,” Cohen told People at the premiere.

But, according to Weber, she “immediately” agreed to do the project without hesitation.

The documentary, which will debut on HBO and be available to stream on Max this summer, is described as a “deeply personal portrait of one of New York’s greatest legends,” according to Tribeca Film

It includes “rare, never-before-seen archival footage with candid, soul-baring interviews to chart Billy Joel’s meteoric rise,” per the description.

Weber breaks silence on Joel’s recent brain disorder diagnosis

In a separate interview with E! News at the documentary’s premiere, which took place at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, Weber openly praised her ex-husband for his hard work through the years.

“I’ve never known anybody who worked harder than he did in all those years we were together and working together,” she said of Joel.

As for her favorite song of his, Weber says there’s “too many of them” and that “they’re all marvelous.”

She also commented on her ex-husband’s recent brain disorder diagnosis.

“I just want him to be restored to good health so he can enjoy his life and his wife and his children. He earned that,” Weber told E! News. “The restoration of his good health is all I really care about.”

The “Uptown Girl” singer revealed in May that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

According to the Cleveland Clinic, NPH is “a brain condition that happens when fluid buildup inside or around your brain disrupts your brain function.”

It’s most common in people over the age of 65, but only affects about 0.2% of people between 70 and 80, and about 5.9% of people over 80.

The singer revealed the news — and canceled all scheduled concerts — in a May 23 Instagram post.

“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” Joel said in the post, “and thank you for understanding.

Joel didn’t attend the documentary’s premiere, but his current wife, Alexis Roderick, did, according to the New York Post
