Dick Van Dyke is reflecting on a century of life as he counts the days to his 100th birthday celebration.
The iconic six-time Emmy winner, best known for his time on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” between 1961 and 1966, will be celebrating his 100th birthday on Dec. 13.
In an interview with People, published Nov. 29, the actor opened up about the struggles that came with his fame.
“In the beginning I was [raising] a family with no money, so the whole thing was getting some money together and getting a home,” Van Dyke said of his early success.

He recalled doing “about everything” he could to make a name for himself — including “doing a disc jockey show at five in the morning, and then at night I was working with a partner in nightclubs.”
The long shifts resulted in him getting between three and four hours of sleep each night.
“But that's the only thing I can remember, is working so hard to get going, to get a foothold,” Van Dyke added. “After that I've enjoyed every minute of it.”
That’s not to say it didn’t come with sacrifices, though — especially when it came to his wife and kids.
“They probably got neglected at some point, because I was really working hard to get out of poverty, so to speak, but I haven't had any complaints from anybody,” he told People.
Van Dyke started dating his first wife, Margie Willett, when he was 20, according to “The Guardian.”
He previously revealed that they were too broke to get married, but a radio show offered to pay for the wedding if they got married on the show. The couple tied the knot on Feb. 12, 1948.
They went on to welcome four children together — sons Barry and Christian, and daughters Stacy and Carrie Beth — before getting divorced in 1984. Willett later died in 2007.
Dick Van Dyke's wife reveals his plans for his 100th birthday
In a Dec. 7 interview with People, Van Dyke’s current wife, Arlene Silver, revealed their plans for his 100th birthday on Dec. 13.
“He doesn't want to do anything,” Silver, 54, said of Van Dyke before sharing what they actually plan on doing when that day comes. “He wants to be in his room watching ‘Jeopardy!’ reruns with me.”
The makeup artist first met Van Dyke at the SAG Awards in 2006. They tied the knot in 2012.

“I'm so honored to have him in my life, take care of him, and nurture this community that we've built, that he's built over the years,” Silver told People of her husband.
While they’re at home watching “Jeopardy!” re-runs, the rest of the world will be celebrating his fruitful life.

On Dec. 13 and 14, Fathom Events is hosting the “Dick Van Dyke 100th Celebration” — a feature-length tribute film available in theatres across the country.
PBS is also airing a special, “American Masters – Starring Dick Van Dyke,” on Dec. 12.
Dick Van Dyke’s 100th birthday comes just one month after the actor released his newest book, “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist's Guide to a Happy Life,” on Nov. 18.
The book contains a collection of stories, reflections and life advice on how Van Dyke has maintained a zest for life after 100 years.
