“It's gonna be hard, but this is important, and I've got to do this.”
On Friday, March 14, Dolly Parton made her first public appearance since the death of her husband. See what she had to say below:
This comes after Parton has released a new song in her husband's honor.
The emotional country ballad called “If You Hadn’t Been There,” details the profound impact Carl Thomas Dean had on Parton.
“I fell in love with Carl Dean when I was 18 years old,” she wrote of the song on Instagram.
“We have spent 60 precious and meaningful years together. Like all great love stories, they never end. They live on in memory and song. He will always be the star of my life story, and I dedicate this song to him,” Parton continued.
The music legend begins the song, singing, “If you hadn’t been there, where would I be?”
“Without your trust, love, and belief. The ups and downs, we’ve always shared. And I wouldn’t be here,” the song continues.
“If you hadn’t been you. Well, who would I be? You’ve always seen the best in me, your loving arms have cradled me. You held me close And I believe I wouldn’t be here, if you hadn’t been there.”
Parton released the song on March 7 after releasing a statement on March 6.
“This is a love note to family, friends, and fans,” Parton wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for all the messages, cards, and flowers that you've sent to pay your respects for the loss of my beloved husband Carl.”
“I can't reach out personally to each of you but just know it has meant the world to me. He is in God's arms now and I am okay with that. I will always love you,” Parton concluded.
Dean, who has maintained his privacy over the last six decades despite being married to one of the most popular country music artists of all time, passed away in Nashville on March 3 at the age of 82.
“He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie," Parton shared.
"Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can't do justice the love we shared for over 60 years,” she continued. “Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
