Drew Barrymore shares her secret to aging gracefully. “It isn’t how you look”

Ryan Brennan04/29/25

Drew Barrymore is sharing her secrets to aging gracefully.

The 50-year-old actress-turned-host was fielding questions from her audience during a recent episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” when she was asked about aging and being comfortable in her own skin.

While she said she “hasn’t done anything” in terms of surgery — and would like to keep it that way — she did share some of her best words of wisdom for those struggling to find confidence in their appearance.

“Do whatever works for you,” Barrymore told the audience

“I know this woman who went through so much stuff in her life and she just did something that made her feel so good about herself and it, like, changed her whole perspective,” she explained.

The secret, she says, is to not judge others for doing things differently — and to be nicer to yourself.

“We’re all on our own path and we have to support each other,” she continued — adding that the biggest difference someone can make is not how they look to others, but how they look at themselves.

“I cannot believe the first thing we do and say when we look in a mirror,” she said. “Like, how many beautiful moments do we even get the privilege of seeing our reflection?”

“And that person looking back at us is us,” she continues.

With that, Barrymore challenged her audience to be “kinder, more patient, more resilient, more loving, more embracing (and) less dismissive” with themselves.

“A smile is better than any lipstick you’ll buy,” she continues, “and an internal dialogue that isn’t so eviscerating of ourselves and so quick to catch a flaw.”

She described those flaws as “ironic” because they “might be someone else’s favorite thing about you.”

Barrymore left her audience with one final nugget: “It isn’t how you look, it’s how you feel.”

Barrymore says she can’t get behind the anti-aging trend

In a recent interview with Real Simple, published April 28, Barrymore opened up about her biggest beauty regret and the beauty trends she likes — and doesn’t like.

“I try not to have any regrets; part of the fun of beauty is the chance to experiment,” Drew said.

“That being said, I may have been overly enthusiastic with tweezing my eyebrows in the ‘90s. But it was a thing! Live and learn!” she added.

Barrymore has been open about her former obsession with plucking her eyebrows.

In April 2024, she took to her Instagram to post a throwback photo of her with plucked eyebrows. “My tweezers and I were best friends at this time in my life!” she wrote in the caption.

Several months later, she posted another throwback photo of her with fuller eyebrows. “Before I plucked my eyebrows…” she wrote in the caption.

Another trend she wishes would go away? The anti-aging trend

“I just can’t get behind anti-aging anything. Aging is a gift—it means we’re still here! I want to embrace time, not fight against it,” she told Real Simple.

Instead of avoiding or ignoring age, Barrymore said she likes to embrace her true self.

“The trend of authentic, real, honest-to-goodness self-acceptance and self-love,” she told the outlet. “What’s more beautiful than that?”

As for the morning habit she swears by, Barrymore said it all starts in front of the mirror.

“I take a minute in the mirror every morning to say something kind to myself,” she said. “Mind-body-soul hygiene.”

She also said she washes her face in the morning — albeit gently.
