Ethan Hawke Says His Teens’ Classmates Care More About Sister Maya Than Their Famous Dad

Ethan Hawke might still be winning awards, but he’s no longer the most famous actor in his family. 

The 55-year-old dad of three recently won the Best Actor award at the National Society of Film Critics Awards, but his younger daughters’ classmates wouldn’t know it because they’re not focused on him. 

Instead, they’re focused on his older daughter Maya, who stars as Robin in “Stranger Things.” 

Ethan Hawke opened up about what it was like watching his daughter in the series during a Jan. 5 appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” — and he’s one happy dad.

“You know, a lot of people in America were watching ‘Stranger Things,’ but not everybody in America was watching their daughter, with their siblings right to their side,” he said of watching it as a family. 

“And so we were invested, and I have to say, hats off,” he added. 

Hawke went on to praise his daughter — and the rest of the cast — for doing a “great job” with the series before sharing a hilarious story while filming his FX series “The Lowdown” in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

“My wife was a producer on the show. We brought the whole family down there,” he told Colbert. 

Ethan Hawke’s daughters, who were enrolled in school in Tulsa, visited their father on set one day when the director asked them how hard it was to have a famous dad — especially at a new school. 

“It’s hard having a famous sister,” he recalled of his daughters’ answer — which he used as proof that his daughter has officially “upstaged” him. 

“Nobody cares about my dad,” they continued. “My sister’s picture is in the lockers everywhere.”

It appears Maya Hawke is well aware of just how famous she is in her household. 

During an interview with MJ Marfori, shared on Instagram Jan. 1, Maya Hawke told a story about the moment she realized how big of a show “Stranger Things” had become. 

“I was walking down the street with my dad and someone went, ‘Whoa, hey!’” she recalled. “And my dad turned around and he went, ‘Sorry, I’m not doing any pictures or photos today.’” 

Maya Hawke’s dad kept walking, but it turns out the fan wasn’t shocked to see him. 

“And the guy was like, ‘I don’t know who you are, man, I wanted to talk to Robin,’” she said — referring to her character’s name in the series. 

Ethan Hawke was shown a clip of that interview during an appearance on the “Today” show and he immediately burst into laughter. 

“She’s actually being shy,” he said. “That’s happened like five times.”

Ethan Hawke shares two kids — daughter Maya, 27, and son Levon Roan, 23 — with his ex-wife Uma Thurman, whom he was married to from 1998 to 2005, according to People.

He also shares two younger daughters — Clementine Jane, 17, and Indiana, 14 — with his current wife Ryan Shawhughes Hawke.
