Jennifer Aniston explains how one of her ‘stubborn’ co-stars on ‘Friends’ became her loyal companion

Ryan Brennan | September 15, 2025

Jennifer Aniston has a tattoo on her foot honoring one of her former “Friends” co-stars.

But it’s not who you think it is.

During an appearance on the Sept. 10 episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Aniston opened up about her life at home with her two beloved rescue dogs — Lord Chesterfield and Clyde.

Both dogs are heavily featured on her Instagram account, but neither are featured on her foot.

Instead, that honor went to her first ever rescue dog Norman — who had a brief cameo on “Friends.”

While talking to Stephen Colbert, Aniston explained that Norman appeared on the episode where Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler (David Schwimmer) babysit Ross’ (David Schwimmer) baby Ben.

The episode, titled “The One with the Baby on the Bus,” aired on Nov. 2, 1995 (Season 2, Episode 6), per IMDB.

While babysitting, Joey and Chandler accidentally lose baby Ben after leaving him on a bus.

"They're running through New York City streets, trying to find the bus that they left the baby on, and you know how New York has these wonderful dog walkers with 20 dogs on leashes,” she says to Colbert.

“Norman was one of those dogs," she added.

Aniston, who had never owned a dog before, approached one of the animal trainers and asked them if they had any dogs available to adopt — because she was looking for one.

The trainers turned to Norman, a one-year-old dog who was a “stubborn” performer that never did what they asked him to do and was always missing his mark.

So, Aniston decided to “retire” the pup and adopt him as her own.

According to People, Norman died in 2011 after more than a decade of being by Aniston’s side.

Jennifer Aniston launched a fund to support animal shelters in 2024

Aniston has always been a huge supporter of shelter animals and rescue organizations.

In 2024, ahead of the Oct. 1 release of her first children’s book “Clydeo Takes a Bite Out of Life,” she launched The Clydeo Fund — inspired by Jennifer Aniston’s dog Clyde.

According to its official website, The Clydeo Fund “is committed to creating a kinder, more loving world for shelter animals around the globe by providing critical assistance to rescue organizations.”

On Sept. 9, Aniston released her second book, “Cook with Clydeo: A Cookbook for Kids” — with two more Clyde-inspired books in the works.

“Clydeo versus Peanut Butter” is expected to be released on Dec. 30, followed by “Clydeo Makes a Friend” in March 2026, per HarperCollins

All proceeds from the cookbook series support the work she does through The Clydeo Fund.

"We can help these animals, and we can get awareness out, and help the shelters that are in desperate need of upkeep because they're falling apart," she said in a September interview with People

"They can't keep up. And all you see is that we're euthanizing innocent, beautiful, perfectly, perfectly fine two-year-old dogs, or a puppy, or a litter. I can't. It's too much. It's too many,” she added.

According to the ASPCA, “5.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024.”

While 4.2 million of those shelter animals were adopted last year, approximately 607,000 animals were euthanized in shelters, per the ASPCA.
