Julie Chrisley reveals the most difficult part of her two-year prison sentence

Ryan Brennan | July 10, 2025

Julie Chrisley is ready to give her kids what they’ve been missing — a good mother.

The 52-year-old reality TV star was sentenced to seven years in prison for tax evasion and bank fraud in 2022, but was recently pardoned by President Donald Trump after just two years.

Now that she’s back at home, Julie Chrisley is opening up about her time away.

"For me, that was one of the most difficult things about being in prison,” she said of being away from her kids on her daughter’s latest “Unlocked” podcast episode, released on July 8.

“Because I pride myself on being a good mother," she continued. "I pride myself in always being there for my children, and to have a time where I couldn't be there was, at some point, it’s debilitating."

Julie Chrisley shares three children — Chase, 29, Savannah, 27, and Grayson, 19 — with her husband, Todd Chrisley, who was also recently pardoned after serving two years of his 12-year prison sentence.

She’s also a stepmom to Todd Chrisley’s two older children — Lindsie, 35, and Kyle, 33.

In 2016, Julie and Todd Chrisley legally adopted Kyle’s 12-year-old daughter, Chloe, after years of “substance abuse and run-ins with the law,” according to People

During her July 8 podcast appearance, Julie Chrisley shared why being away from her kids was so hard.

"Because I know that Grayson and Chloe, especially, but (also) you and Chase, even though you're adults, you still need your parents," she explained.”

"And I think that's what people need to realize,” she continued. “That when you're being sentenced (by) these judges, it was very easy to say, 'Oh, there's lots of people that can help them raise their kids.' No.”

Julie Chrisley went on to reveal that she was only given 10 minutes per day to talk to her children while in prison.

"There is only a certain amount that you can do from in there,” she said.

Julie Chrisley praises daughter for stepping up while she was gone

Julie Chrisley’s comments come less than two weeks after the release of her ABC News studio special.

The Chrisleys: Life After Lockup,” released June 29, is a one-episode special dives into the couple’s experience while incarcerated, the impact of their convictions and their journey to reintegrate into society.

At one point in the episode, Julie Chrisley praised her daughter for taking care of Chloe and Grayson.

"I have to say I was beyond proud. That’s probably what I’m the most proud of because they did deserve to be left without a mom, and she was able to step right in and not miss a beat,” she said of Savannah.

“I can never thank her for that," she said. "And the things that they were able to do and accomplish, I just couldn’t have done it any better,” she added, per People

Todd Chrisley echoed his wife’s sentiment on the July 8 episode of Savannah Chrisley’s “Unlocked” podcast.

“I was grateful that we had you,” he said of Savannah. “I knew in my heart that you would take care of Grayson and that you would take care of Chloe.”

He went on to credit his faith for keeping him grounded while in prison.
