“They’ve been warming up."
Just hours before he was expected to walk his first Met Gala red carpet, NBA star LeBron James announced he was no longer attending.
James wouldn’t have been just any guest attending the Gala, he was also an honorary chair for the yearly event.
James announced his decision to skip the glamorous gala, which raises money for museum’s Costume Institution, on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on! Hate to miss an historical event,” James explained.
However, James won’t be without representation, revealing that his wife, Savannah James, will still be gracing the red carpet without him.
“My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!”
According to ESPN, James "suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain to his left knee” during the Lakers April 30 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

After the game, he responded to retirement inquiries saying that he would be discussing it with his family and “support group.”
James is currently playing alongside his 20-year-old son, Bronny James, who was drafted by the Lakers in 2024, calling it his “No. 1 accomplishment I've ever been able to do."
