Luka Doncic Claims Goga Bitadze Made an Explicit Threat Against Family Prior to Technical

Ryan Brennan | March 23, 2026

On a Saturday night in Orlando, a reaching foul in the third quarter of a Lakers-Magic game became the flashpoint for something far more complex than a typical basketball dust-up.

When Luka Doncic and Goga Bitadze began exchanging words at the free throw line, they weren’t just trash-talking — they were waging a conflict rooted in cultural identity, family honor, and a shared language that no one else on the court could understand.

Doncic, a Slovenian, and Bitadze, a Georgian, are both products of European basketball’s interconnected world. Both have deep ties to Serbia — Doncic speaks Serbian, and Bitadze spent time playing there before heading to the NBA.

When the verbal altercation erupted, it played out in Serbian, a detail that would prove significant.

What Was Said — and Who Could Hear It

According to video shared by the NBA on YouTube, the exchange began after Bitadze was called for a reaching foul — his fourth of the game — on a Doncic drive to the rim. As Doncic stood at the free throw line, the two players started chirping.

After the first free throw, Doncic walked over and spoke with referee Sean Corbin. The verbal sparring continued as both players ran down the court.

Both were issued technical fouls. But here is where the cultural layers deepen: Lakers head coach J.J. Redick commented on the exchange after the game, noting a critical detail.

“I’m not sure what happened,” he said. “I do know that there were certain things said in a language that the referees couldn’t understand in reference to Luka’s mom.”

The referees, unable to comprehend the Serbian-language exchange, were left to manage a conflict they could hear but not fully decode.

Two Versions of Events, One Cultural Fault Line

In a post-game press conference, Doncic offered his account. “I let my team down, but honestly I wasn’t trying to,” he said.

“He said at the free-throw (line) he would f— my whole family and at some point, I just can’t stand it and I’ve got to stand up for myself. I know my teammates have my back. I let them down today, but hopefully it’ll get rescinded,” he added.

Bitadze, speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, told a strikingly different story — one steeped in a pointed cultural claim.

“I have all the respect for Luka and what he has done. And I really respect everybody’s family,” Bitadze said. “Where I come from, it’s really sacred and we really respect each other’s families and I would never directly say that.”

“He just said some inappropriate things in the Serbian language, which, I played in Serbia. I understand, I don’t know if he knew | understood what he said. So I just said it back. And it was nothing towards his family or anybody. His family, I really, truly respect them and that’s pretty much it,” he added.

What Came of Luka Doncic's Technical Foul

In a pool report, Crew Chief Mark Davis said both players were issued technical fouls “for their continual taunting of one another.” Davis added that they “were both warned to cease their comments” before continuing their spat.

The technical foul was Doncic’s 16th of the season. According to the NBA rulebook, 16 technical fouls in a single season results in a one-game suspension.

On Sunday, the NBA rescinded both technical fouls after they were appealed, per ESPN. Doncic will be available to play in Monday’s game against the Detroit Pistons.

The on-court dispute may be settled.

The deeper questions it raised — about what language barriers mean for NBA officiating, where cultural norms around family honor intersect with league rules, and what speech the game can realistically police — remain open.
