One of Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s co-stars shares heartbreaking statement after learning of his death.
Warner and actress Shaunette Wilson worked together for several years on the set of “The Resident.” Warner played Dr. AJ Austin for 96 episodes and Wood played Dr. Mina Okafor for 67 episodes.
On Monday, July 21, Wilson took to Instagram to share a photo of their time on set while remembering her dear friend.
“Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins,” Wilson began her statement. “I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you were of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence.”
“I’m beyond heartbroken,” Wilson continued. “You were such a dear friend to me. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones he leaves behind. I cannot conceive the amount of grief with such a tragedy.”
“Rest in Power, Malcolm,” she concluded her post. “It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ. I will miss you deeply.”
News of Warner’s death was shared with the public earlier today. In addition to being known for his role on “The Resident,” Warner became a household name in the mid 1980s when he played Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on the hit sitcom “The Cosby Show” until 1992.
According to Costa Rican National Police, Warner accidentally drowned while on a family vacation in Cocles beach in Costa Rica. Authorities tell ABC News that Warner got caught by a high current.
He was found on Sunday, July 20. His official cause of death is asphyxia, police told ABC News.
On his Instagram page, Warner recently shared a photo of another one of his “The Resident” co-stars Matt Czuchry, who played Dr. Conrad Hawkins.
Sharing words written by his friend Alimi Ballard, the post read, “Took this (photo a) year ago today. Been on a text (thread) with these two jokers for about 6 years. (Six) years of non stop encouragement, NON stop compassion, Light, CARE, Brotherhood, OBSCENE laughter, and sometimes simply holding space for each other.”
“Take the time to pour into YOUR tribe,” Ballard continued. “Spend time with your folks OFF LINE. WE are what we need. Together we ARE…”
Warner is survived by a wife and a child.
