Michelle Obama shares ‘a bit of wisdom’ one year after her mother’s death

June 3, 2025

Michelle Obama is sharing a bit of her mother’s wisdom one year after she passed.

The 61-year-old former First Lady and wife of former President Barack Obama took to Instagram on May 31 to reflect on the many things her mother, Marian Robinson, taught her before she died last year

Robinson, who was 86 years old at the time of her death, passed away on May 31, 2024.

“We lost my mother a year ago, but somehow, it almost feels like she’s with us more and more each day,” Michelle Obama wrote in the caption alongside two photos of the mother-daughter duo.

“I notice it in the way I channel her when I’m giving advice to my daughters, or catching up with my brother Craig, or sitting down for dinner with Barack,” she added. “She’s not with us, but she is.”

Michelle Obama went on to share some of the mixed emotions she has felt over the past year.

“Some days, the loss hits you like a wave, again and again. Some days, I’m buoyed by the strength she fostered in me,” she explained — adding that “grief hasn’t been straightforward” for her.

“Most days, I’m just thankful to have had the chance to learn from her at all,” she added.

But with grief comes perspective, and with perspective comes wisdom — and Michelle Obama made sure to share with her followers some of the wisdom she learned from her mother through the years.

“You’re enough,” she recalled of her mother’s advice before putting her own spin on it.

“You’re enough because of the people who have poured so much love and wisdom into you,” Michelle Obama wrote in the caption. “And even in their absence, their light emanates through you.”

“Whether you’re hurting or rejoicing today, I hope you find a way to pour that light into someone else,” she concluded.

Michelle Obama reveals her husband’s reaction to her mother’s death

Michelle Obama’s post comes exactly one year after she announced her mother’s death on Instagram.

In the caption, Michelle Obama referred to her mother as “my rock.”

“Always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today,” the former First Lady wrote.

On the May 7 episode of her “IMO” podcast, which she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama opened up about the grieving process that followed their mother’s death.

And it included the three-word reaction her husband, Barack Obama, had to the news.

“You’re next up,” Michelle Obama recalled her husband saying.

“That’s sort of the darned thing about being a grown-up. When you lose your parents, you’re next up,” she explained before joking that Barack Obama, who is two years older than her, was “next up.”

On May 11, Michelle Obama marked her first Mother’s Day without her “rock.”

“My mom was many things: whipsmart, fiercely independent, kind, courageous, and determined,” she wrote in a Mother’s Day tribute for her mom on Instagram.

“She was incredibly forward thinking, and was someone we could always count on to be there for us, especially during those White House years,” she added.

In a statement at the time of Marian Robinson’s death, the Obama family shared a slew of the matriarch’s best words of advice.

“Don’t sweat the small stuff. Know what’s truly precious. As a parent, you’re not raising babies — you’re raising little people,” the family wrote of what they learned from Marian Robinson.

“Don’t worry about whether anybody else likes you. Come home. We’ll always like you here,” the family added.
