If you asked Olivia Munn, her mom, Dung Kim Munn, loves to talk.
So much so that a conversation meant to fill silence led to Olivia Munn naming her daughter after a lie.
In September 2024, Olivia Munn and her husband, comedian John Mulaney, welcomed their daughter Méi June Mulaney into the world.
As Munn told Seth Meyers on May 12, prior to welcoming Méi into the world, Kim Munn told them that the American version of her name Dung was June.
“One day we were driving,” Olivia Munn told Meyers, “my mom just says, out of nowhere, ‘you know, people call me June. My mom's name is Dung. It's spelled D-U-N-G. And so she said, ‘You know, people call me June.’ And I said, ‘When do people call you June?’ And she was like, ‘You know, a lot of people call me June. It's the Americanized name for Dung.’”
Olivia Munn admitted at the time she was confused because she never heard anyone call her mom June. “You know her middle name is Kim. So everyone calls her Kim. But okay,” the actress told Meyers.
As a result of that conversation, it was Mulaney who came up with the idea to name their daughter Méi June, in honor of Olivia Munn’s mom.
“So then later, John’s saying, ‘You know, that would be such a pretty name and such a great way to honor your mother. So why don't we name her Méi June?’ I thought that's a great idea. It's a great idea.”
Olivia Munn continued saying she was so excited to see her mom’s reaction to naming their daughter after her.
“After we have the baby, we send a text to the family and be like, ‘She's here! Méi June Mulaney, and she's named after mom, and I guess people call mom, June, and we're so excited,” she recalled sharing.
But the excitement began to unravel when Kim Munn met her granddaughter for the first time.
“My mom comes to the hospital, and she's holding the baby, and I realized she didn't say anything about the name yet. So I said, ‘Mom, what do you what do you think about her name?’ She goes, ’It's okay.’”

Olivia Munn would later come to realize that not everyone calls her mom June, in fact it was only “two women” in 1987 who once called her mom June.
Despite the mishap, Olivia Munn says they won’t be changing their daughter’s name, keeping it Méi June.
“It's staying June,” she told Meyers. “We're not changing it. So yeah, she's kind of in honor of my mother, but I hope she doesn't grow up to be as big a liar.”
