“I want to dedicate this, this award to my kids."
More than a year after retiring from touring, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith made an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
In August 2024, Aerosmith announced that Tyler had suffered a career-ending throat injury forcing them to cancel the remainder of their “Peace Out” tour.
In a statement shared by the band, at the time, they wrote, “As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury.”
In 2023, it was announced that Tyler suffered damage to his vocal chords and fractured is larynx, People reported.
“We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the statement revealed, before announcing their decision to “retire from the touring stage.”
Tyler and Perry teased their MTV VMA appearance several days before the show aired live with a video showcasing a snippet of Tyler’s voice now. In a separate post, the pair revealed that they would be honoring the late Ozzy Osbourne, leading singer of Black Sabbath, following is passing in July.

Jack Osbourne's, Ozzy's, kicked off the memorial with a special message that included several of his grandchildren.
"I wish we could be there with you all tonight as you celebrate my dad's amazing musical journey," Jack said. "I know for sure it would make him incredibly happy to see these great musicians carry on his legacy and help inspire the next generation of rockers."
Osbourne thanked Tyler and Perry for helping honor his father before saying, "We love you, dad," as Ozzy's grandchildren took over. "And in the words of our Papa, 'Let's get crazy!'"
Tyler sang Mama I'm Coming Home alongside Perry and Yungblud. Despite the health Steven has endured, Tyler hit his signature high notes he has become known for.
"That Ozzy tribute was fantastic. Steven Tyler can still hold any room," fans raved on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Watching Steven Tyler at the #VMA was something I didn’t know I needed," another fan noted.
"Steven Tyler is 77 years old, sounding exactly like the rock star he is. Awesome," shared another.
