Usher is apologizing after a “weird” interaction at the 2025 Met Gala — but it’s all in good fun.
The 46-year-old “Hey Daddy” singer was both a guest and member of the committee for what many people consider fashion’s biggest night out on May 5.
The R&B icon also performed a slew of his most popular songs alongside fellow icon Stevie Wonder, per People.

That’s when things took a bit of a flirty turn.
At one point during his performance, Usher walked up to singer Sabrina Carpenter and fed her a cherry — which became a tradition during Usher’s Past Present Future Tour.
It’s unclear what song he was singing at the time, but it's reported that he normally brings out the flirty move while singing his 2010 hit song "There Goes My Baby.”
The gimmick initially started as a serenade, but has gradually evolved to include fruit — particularly cherries.
On May 7, Carpenter took to Instagram to share a carousel of photos from her night at the Met Gala, which included a photo of her moment with Usher.
In the final slide, she shared a screenshot of her father’s reaction to the moment.
“? Weird,” her father, David (listed as “Dadda” in her phone), wrote under the photo.
Usher, who’s no stranger to catching heat over his cherry-feeding habits, took to the comment section of Carpenter’s post to jokingly apologize to her father.
“Apologies Mr Carpenter,” Usher wrote next to a sweaty smile emoji and cherry emoji.
The moment, photo and comment were all in good fun — and fans were in love with the interaction.
“Glad to know parents don’t stop getting disappointed regardless of fame,” one fan commented, while another fan wrote, “Understandable reaction from Dadda.”
A third fan suggested that “?Weird” should be the title of Carpenter’s next album.
Carpenter isn’t the first celebrity to take part in Usher’s cherry segment
The cherry moment has become a bit of a trademark at Usher’s concerts.
In fact, many fans — and even celebrities — dream of being the lucky woman to share that sensual moment with one of R&B’s biggest stars.
Aside from Carpenter, other celebrities to eat a cherry out of Usher’s hands include Keke Palmer, Tiny, Halle Bailey and Rubi Rose, per Complex.
During an appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” earlier this year, Usher opened up about the origin of his signature concert stunt.
"Well, it started with strawberries in Vegas. So, you know, I just figured we just try all the fruits until we figure out which one works the best," Usher joked, per Complex.
"But cherries were something that I felt was fun and just kind of active," he explained.
The singer, who married his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Goicoechea in 2024, per Today, clarified that his intentions are pure when it comes to the cherries.
"It's just just fun activation and, I mean, that's what R&B is all about–being connected and making people feel something," he told host Jennifer Hudson. "I don't mean to break up houses."
With that said, Usher warns his fans of the risk they take when coming to his show.

"I have a very happy home and I don't want to break up anybody else's happy home," he said. "But, if you're going to take the risk, why not come to the Usher show and have a good time?"
