“I had no idea obviously — no one could — of the longevity of its life."
Kate Gosselin gave fans a scare earlier this week when she posted a photo to TikTok from what appeared to have been a hospital bed, asking for prayers. Here's what we know so far about what happened to the reality star.
Why were fans worried about Kate Gosselin?
In the photo, which she posted on Tuesday, Sept. 30, Gosselin's arm could be seen with an IV situated on her wrist with a pulse oximeter clipped to her finger.
"Please pray for me tonight and tomorrow. I will be fine, but I’m scared and would appreciate prayers!" the 50-year-old wrote over the photo, adding in the post that "emergencies don’t care about schedules" and telling fans not to worry about her, but pray for her. She also said that she would update everyone with story time later explaining what happened.
What happened to Kate Gosselin?
Later that day, Gosselin explained what happened in a TikTok Live. She said at the time, she was with her boyfriend Steve, who she recently revealed in a TikTok Q&A that she's been dating for a little over a year.
"Yesterday was a normal day … we decided to take the dogs for a walk. So we went to a little area where you can play in our neighborhood and we’re playing ball," she explained in the live video, via People. "My boyfriend threw the ball and she came running for it and she was running at the absolute speed of light and I stepped the wrong way. I tried to get out of the way and she ran into the side of my leg, my knee, at top speed."
Gosselin said that the only way she could describe the impact was like "a concrete wall running at the speed of light."
"The pain was so bad I just crumbled on the ground," she continued, noting that she "felt stuff move" in her leg and freaked out. "I kept waiting for the pain to wear off or dial down and it never did."
Eventually, the Jon & Kate Plus 8 star realized she needed medical attention, explaining, "I’m gonna have to deal with bones floating around." Steve pulled the car around for her and took her to an urgent care facility, before she was eventually admitted to the hospital.
"I ended up with a tibial plateau fracture and surgery with plates and pins in my leg," Gosselin revealed. "The surgeon said it was life-altering issues. That was his opening line this morning at 5 a.m.: 'So this is one of those things that is a life-altering event.' I was like, he’s got my attention."
All told, the surgery apparently took three hours. On Wednesday, Gosselin updated fans in a follow up TikTok post.
"I had surgery this morning and five pain meds on board (top 3 most painful surgery)," she wrote. "I am not in a position to go into the details now but only because I can't focus. I did well. Details coming soon. CANNOT thank you enough for all your prayers! Love you guys!"
Is Kate Gosselin going to be OK?
On Thursday, Oct. 2, Gosselin shared that she was being discharged from the hospital. In another TikTok post on Friday morning, she revealed that she was finally home and had slept "amazingly" in her own bed.
"We're still getting situated here. Physical therapy like, in-home nursing like I do, is, coming by to do a consult soon," she explained. I'm gonna brush my teeth if I can get it together before they come in. But we're setting up services starting for next week."
Gosselin added that she's going to share a "long story time" about what happened, since many of her fans missed the initial live video.
The mother of eight worked as a nurse when Jon & Kate Plus 8 first aired in 2007, and after moving to North Carolina in 2021, obtained her multi-state, registered nurse license. Gosselin shares twins Mady and Cara with her ex-husband Jon Gosselin, as well as sextuplets Aaden, Collin, and Joel, Alexis, Hannah, and Leah.
