Burger King to take a more family-friendly approach as it reveals new indoor play place for kids

Ryan Brennan | October 5, 2025

Changes are coming to Burger King — and your kids may stand to benefit the most.

At the 2025 Burger King US&C Convention, which was held Sept. 9-15, the fast food restaurant made a strong commitment to fostering a more family-friendly environment at its locations nationwide.

Among those commitments was a new-and-improved modular play place for kids younger than 10.

According to Restaurant Business, the Burger King play place features “a maze of tunnels and towers designed to look like a beige-and-orange castle” — and is equipped with “quick slides and a ball pit.”

The new addition will be optional, meaning they won’t be available at all locations.

The announcement comes at a time when other fast food chains, such as McDonald’s, are scaling back on their play place offerings — a move that largely began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But in an effort to close the gap between its biggest competitor, Burger King is changing its approach.

Aside from the kids’ play place, Burger King is also making family-friendly changes to its menu, marketing efforts and the overall layout and design of its restaurants — known as the “Sizzle” remodel.

For example, the redesign “features some larger booths specifically designed for families, particularly those with young children,” according to Restaurant Business.

It’s also making a bigger effort with its kids' meal program — which means more toys and figurines for kids. And that was evident with the release of its “How to Train Your Dragon Meal” in May.

“At BK, we love to bring partnerships to life that create an awesome experience for families,” Burger King’s CMO Joel Yashinsky said in a press release at the time.

“Our new collaboration with How to Train Your Dragon is going to be fun for both kids and kids at heart,” he added.

Last month, the company introduced “a fun lineup of collectible toys inspired by Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Gang” ahead of the spooky season, which have been available since Sept. 16, per Today.com

Burger King officially cancels its ‘Creepy King’ mascot — for good

Many parents today remember growing up with Ronald McDonald and The King.

McDonald’s started phasing out its iconic (yet creepy) mascot in the mid-2010s, while Burger King retired its similarly-creepy mascot in 2011 — though they both have made brief appearances in the years since.

As part of BK’s new family-friendly approach, it’s finally doing away with the “Creepy King” for good.

“There were a number of learnings we had from creepy king,” Yashinsky said at the convention, according to Restaurant Business. “And we’ve moved away from creepy king because he had limited appeal.”

But don’t worry — the company isn’t shying away from its iconic paper crowns, which recently got a bedazzled new look.

“At our heart and soul, we were always a family brand,” Yashinsky said. “You will see that in the work we do, from advertising, from social media, a brand that’s welcoming and fun, but not at anyone’s expense.”

That commitment is evident with their recent Halloween-inspired offerings

Last month, Burger King announced the return of its BK Halloween Buckets after a one-year hiatus — which will be available in locations nationwide starting Oct. 16.

Burger King also recently announced its first-ever Monster Menu, which features a Jack-O-Lantern Whopper, Vampire Nuggets, Mummy Mozzarella Fries and Franken-Candy Sundae, per Today.com.
